The Princess and the Frog Features Disney’s First Black Princess
65Move over Cinderella, there's a new princess in town. People are all abuzz about the long overdo creation of Disney’s first Black princess and her debut movie, The Princess and the Frog. Yep, it's true; Princess Tiana will join the ranks of other popular Disney Princesses including Cinderella, Snow White, and Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
Apparently, The Princess and the Frog has been in the works for some time, but controversy surrounding the movie’s plot, the princess’s name, and a few other details sent Disney back to the drawing board. People were outraged because several aspects of the original version of the movie were deemed racially offensive.
The Disney movie was originally called, The Frog Princess, instead of The Princess and the Frog. And Tiana was not Disney's first choice for the princess's name; it was Madie (short for Madeline).
But what really had everyone's panties ruffled was the fact that Disney's first Black princess was originally supposed to be a chambermaid for a spoiled Caucasian debutant. Although Disney wanted to keep the American tale historically accurate (movie is set in the 1920's), no little girl’s fairytale should involve emptying someone else's urine and poop out of a pot.
What's The Princess and The Frog All About?
After revamping the movie and changing some of the culturally insensitive points, it seems like Disney finally got it right -- or did they? The Princess and the Frog is loosely based on the book, The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker, and is set in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
When a handsome Prince named Naveen (Bruno Campos) breezes through town, his deal with a voodoo doctor goes sour, and the prince is turned into a frog. Naveen meets a 19-year-old waitress, and aspiring chef named Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) and convinces her to pucker-up to help him break the voodoo doctor's curse. Unfortunately for Tiana, kissing the prince backfires on her, and instead of lifting the spell, she turns into a frog too.
With the help of a love-struck firefly, an old voodoo priestess, and a soulful alligator, Naveen and Tiana go on an unforgettable journey filled with mayhem, music, and humor, to become human again.
Although people are a bit disappointed that Princess Tiana spends most of her time on the silver screen as a frog, kids of all ethnicities will surely enjoy the show-stopping entertainment delivered by The Princess and the Frog.
